This course is intended to be a fun, relaxed introduction to the harmonica and is designed for beginners with no previous harmonica experience. Students will learn simple melodies, blues riffs, and basic harmonica techniques by ear, while discovering how to play along with guitar and ukulele. We’ll explore the sounds of straight harp and cross harp, experiment with bluesy techniques like bends and rhythmic riffs, and spend plenty of time playing together.

Ted Whisenhunt, aka “Cornbread Ted” is a multi-instrumentalist and has been playing harmonica, initially to accompany his other instruments, for 25 years. His “day job” is a Professor of Art and Chairman of the Department of Art at Young Harris College. On weekends and other special events, you may find him playing locally as “Cornbread Ted & Friends.”

Class Description: It's obvious in our lifetimes that cancer has been on the rise; therefore, prevention is a great idea. There have always been doctors and researchers who think outside the box. They look for causes and cures and write books and papers on the subject, and do not settle for chemo, radiation, or surgery. We will explore these other ideas, and learn how they work, along with their many success stories. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Julia began her passion for painting outdoors at an early age by sketching, drawing and painting along the banks of St. Johns River in Northeast Florida. Upon graduating from Florida Southern College with a BA in Fine Ar, Julia began her teaching career in art for the Broward County School District. Julia has won numerous awards for her artwork, including but not limited to Best in Category in 2011 International Fine Arts Competition and Best of Show with the Broward Art Guild.

A study of the history and evolution of rock music from its origins to the present day. Highlights of the course include rock music’s emergence within the context of the history of American music and the social, political, cultural, technological, and economic forces that shaped the music. Issues of race, gender, and class as they relate to various styles will also be discussed. We will begin with an introduction to listening and musical fundamentals, and will gradually develop a vocabulary with which to discuss and experience selected works from the history of rock and roll. No prior familiarity with music is necessary or assumed.

Dr. Richard Knepp is a guitarist with over 30 years of experience teaching private lessons and in group settings. He has been teaching music at Young Harris College since 1999. Dr. Knepp holds a DMA from the University of Georgia where he studied under the direction of acclaimed guitar instructor John Sutherland. He also holds a MM in Classical Guitar Performance from Georgia State University and a BMA from Georgia College and State University in Instrumental Performance. Dr. Knepp has performed in ensembles and as a soloist throughout the United States. As a classical guitarist, he is a regular feature on the concert stage and has been a strong advocate for classical guitar education within the state of Georgia. Many of Dr. Knepp’s students have gone on to pursue college level studies and have also had successful careers as performing artists.

Marian Tillotson, Ph.D., is a retired educator with 36 years in the classroom and as a Central Office Academic Coordinator. She has had an interest in death education and end-of-life issues for over 15 years. She has attended and/or led Death Cafes, on-line programs, and in-person conferences during that time.

Teresa Heavner, MD, is a NC native and a graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She retired from Chatuge Family Practice after 35 years. She served as hospice medical director with Good Shepherd Hospice for 29 years.

Cathy Duke, LPC, is a semi-retired psychotherapist in practice 35+ years. She has a strong interest in death education and regularly participates in opportunities to expand her knowledge through reading, conferences, on-line workshops, and networking.

Suzanne Carter moved to Towns County in 2004 after a 25-year career as a public librarian in Madison, GA. She has served on boards of various groups over the years, including Friends of the Libraries of Towns County, and manages ICL’s on-line store. She has recently developed an interest in learning about and planning for end of life, including attending Death Cafes in Blairsville and death education seminars.

Everyone knows the story. Moses comes down the mountain, finds the people dancing around a golden calf, and shatters the tablets — carved by G-d, written by G-d — on the ground.

Almost nobody has been told what happened next. The broken pieces were not swept up, and they were not buried. They were collected and placed inside the Holy Ark, beside the second, whole set, and remain there for eternity.

Why would anyone keep the broken ones?

Rabbi Yonatan Hambourger takes that question through the Talmud, the Midrash, and the Jewish mystical tradition to an answer about failure — the business that didn't make it, the marriage that ended, the person you fully intended to become — and what Jewish tradition says to do with the pieces. No Hebrew required, no background assumed; all traditions and faiths are welcome.

Rabbi Yonatan Hambourger serves seekers of all faiths in communities across rural Georgia and writes the syndicated newspaper columns Echoes From Sinai, and Taste of Torah. He has taught at the Institute for Continuing Learning since 2023, and his book — Echoes From Sinai: A Torah Voice for All Who Seek — grew directly out of those classes. Plein Air Painting with Watercolors will meet at various locations in the area to paint the beautiful scenes around us. Virginia will email the location of the first class and the supply lists to registrants before the first class. Everyone should bring a portable lawn chair or a portable watercolor easel when we meet outdoors.

If you have, then you know of the exceptional talent that is on display throughout the academic year. In keeping with having "the best for the best" the College has embarked on its "Steinway Initiative," the purpose of which is to make Young Harris pianos exclusively Steinway. ICL is pleased to whole-heartedly support this initiative. This class will present the Steinway story; what makes them the best available, their design and construction. And what makes them the clear choice of all discriminating artists. If you enjoy fine music, you won't want to miss this one.

Alice Tillman Bryant is the Institutional Director for Steinway Piano Galleries in Alpharetta, Georgia. For the past 12 years, she has proudly represented Steinway, building meaningful relationships with colleges, universities, music schools, fine arts organizations, churches, K–12 schools, and distinguished artists from around the world. She has also partnered with development officers and donors to help institutions strengthen their piano programs and enhance their music departments.

A lifelong musician, Alice began playing piano at the age of four and has traveled and performed as a pianist and vocalist around the world. Her deep love of music, combined with her commitment to education and the arts, continues to inspire her work and the communities she serves.

Paint a fresh canvas each session using acrylic paint with guided instruction; OR bring your own project to paint.

Supplies needed: brushes; canvas; palette; table easel; paint (acrylic will be used, watercolor, gouache are okay); table protection; etc.
