Together we will discuss Kelly Barnhill's 2022 novel, When Women Were Dragons. Our protagonist, Alex, teases the plot well: “I was four years old when I first saw a dragon. I was four years old when I first learned to be silent about dragons. Perhaps this is how we learn silence—an absence of words, and absence of context, a hole in the universe where the truth should be" (10). While focusing on this feminist fantasy book, we will also learn about feminist theories and histories to better understand the text's setting and larger occasion. Obtain your own copy of Barnhill's work; discussion slides and other resources will be shared with participants.

Mikala Jones-Wall joined Young Harris College’s Department of Literature and Languages in 2020 soon after earning her MA in English Composition and Rhetoric from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
