Course Instructor Michael Berkman

Course Fee $25.00

This course is designed to familiarize new players with the basics of the game. It will examine the playing field, the pieces and the rules of the game. Basic strategies will be discussed and demonstrated. Students can try their hand at learning by playing. Students will be required to provide their own board and pieces. Inexpensive chess sets are available for under 20 dollars at local retailers for those who do not already have a set.

Mike has been playing Chess for just over 70 years. He still plays in retirement; almost every day online and, even after all those years, he still marvels at the new things he learns about the game each day. He thinks that chess is one of those activities that helps to keep his mind active and alert. "You don't have to win to benefit from the game; just play and enjoy the little lessons it teaches you about life and living. If you take that approach to the game, you will always be the winner".
