Our class will read Heartwood by Amity Gaige. While this literary fiction will serve as the base for our discussions, we will also learn about the Appalachian Trail and native flora and fauna. For our second meeting, a first responder will join us to talk about Search and Rescue protocols and safe hiking practices, which we will connect back to Gaige’s work. Participants will need a copy of Heartwood and should plan to read the text in full before our first course meeting. Additional resources will be provided by the instructor via email.

Mikala Jones-Wall joined Young Harris College’s Department of Literature and Languages in 2020. She holds an MA in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a BA in English Literature from Young Harris College.
