Shaking Your Family Tree 101 is an introductory course designed to teach students the fundamentals of tracing their family history.

Course objectives

• 1.       Introduce students to the basic principles and methods of genealogical research.
• 2.       Teach students how to locate sources.
• 3.       Help students develop skills in analyzing and interpreting historical records.
• 4.       Provide hands-on experience with genealogical online databases.
• 5.       Encourage students to explore their own family histories and cultural heritage.

Tanya Teat Foreman is a Professional Genealogist, Historical Researcher, and Writer dedicated to preserving the ancestral stories that shape families and communities. As founder of Family Matters Genealogy, LLC, she specializes in genealogy with research spanning New England, the Southeast, and the Caribbean. Her work blends archival research, DNA analysis, and narrative storytelling to help clients reclaim their heritage. Tanya is also an educator and public historian, presenting widely on African American and United States history, genealogy, and America 250 topics. She holds a bachelors in Political Science from Rutgers University, a Master’s in History from American Military University and genealogy certifications from Boston University.
